Bloggers and Lankans

Friday, November 28th, 2008

The Bloggers, in complete contrast, would suss out the situation fast and curious. The medium demands mercurial ideas, and in this case of the deadly conflagration in Lanka, the bloggers know what the real problem is : Improper and irresponsible reporting in newspapers and televisions. Bloggers, in general, use this reasoning for whatever matter they may ponder on. If the issue under discussion is the backless-choli of Nayanthara, bloggers know that poor reporting in mainline media has to be invoked. And any line of thinking will immediately trigger several hundreds of comments, and the discussions will fly thick and fast till for heaven knows for how long.

Functions of the UN

Monday, November 24th, 2008

It has to be mentioned here that the UN exists for the sole benefit of editorial writers of the world. Editorial writers, almost by a constitutional decree, invoke the UN even if the matter they are dealing is about lack of water supply in the municipal tap. Bomb the UN, and you would have killed several thousands of edits in one fell swoop!

In the endless hours of discussion where all manner of brilliant ideas were tossed around, it must have slipped the bright minds of the journos that the UN, in its entire history, has not to its credit of stopping even a single roadside fracas, leave alone a conflict of the kind in Sri Lanka. It would also have somehow escaped the attention of the scribes that the war itself has happened because the two sides were anything in a mood for making peace. Just as well that combating forces have little time to read ponderous editorials.

Sri Lankan issue

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Say if the issue is the Sri Lankan conflict, the news paper or the television’s editorial team, comprising men and women who are chosen for their ability to speak or write in words that have little connection with real life, will go into a serious huddle and thoroughly discuss the matter in a manner that is possible only if the profession in general has several chunks of hours to waste. And after the no-holds-bored session of opinions and more opinions, the team will eventually agree that the time for namby-pamby response has gone by and the time for hard action has come: Which in translation means, writing of a powerful editorial arguing passionately for the need to maintain peace by both the sides. And for good measure, the editorial will argue convincingly for the other crying necessity of the occasion, which is :The intervention of the UN.

At last I’m Blogging

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Among the letters that I receive as feedback to this column is one persistent query from many well-meaning individuals. Do I have a blog on my own where the stuff I publish here would be read? Though I tell them that this column is available online, obviating the need for a seperate blog, not many are satisfied. They come back with more persistence: Why don’t I blog? After all, it is the idea which media is slowly gravitating towards. hmmn.. we will see…

Blogging, for the benefit of those readers who are still not clued in on what is happening in the world of ‘www’, is a technology evolved and intelectually effective dustbin where any kind of trash dumped by anyone is okay. This is refreshingly different from the scene in mainstream media, which is altogether a different kind of garbage box where who will junk and what to junk is thoughtfully decided. This, in classical journalism parlance is defined as ‘editorial policy’.
